Donald Scherer

Donald Scherer is an adjunct professor at Tulane and teaches Linux Server Administration, Network Administration, Advanced Network Administration, Managing a Network Infrastructure, Network Security and Virtualization Administration for the Applied Computing Program. Don also teaches the Homeland Security Challenge course and Transportation and Border Security for the Homeland Security Studies Program at Tulane.

Don earned his B.S. in Physics from the University of New Orleans and has multiple graduate degrees including Applied Physics, Theoretical Physics, Engineering and Applied Sciences and an MPS from Tulane University. Education is a process that never ends, so it is not abnormal to see Don in a seat in one classroom, only to teach the next day in the very same room. This dedication to the learning process feeds Don’s desire to advance the education process for all students.

Don began working in IT for GE Capital in 1996 as a network designer, and is now the Senior System Administrator for Tulane University’s Technology Services department. His 20+ years of experience involve networking, firewalls, servers, bladecenters, virtualization (Hyper-v, VMWare and ovirt/RHEV), security, Windows Servers, Linux Servers and DR/BCP planning. Don maintains certifications through US-CERT under the Department of Homeland Security and a GIAC Firewall Expert certification.

When not working, or raising his two sons, cutting edge course development is a passion for Don.
