Biography
Miguel provides educational support to the English Learners (EL) in Jefferson Parish Schools (K – 12th) in his capacity as School Support Coordinator. In addition, he oversees the EL Newcomer Program in middle and high schools, the Foreign Language proficiency test, interpreter training, and faculty trainings in cultural awareness, and second language instructional strategies and best practices. Miguel is a native from Nicaragua. He was an English as a Second Language (ESL) student when he attended Bonnabel High School. He received a BA in Foreign Language Education and Mathematics, and a Master of Arts in Romance Languages from the University of New Orleans. He has more than 25+ years of experience in teaching ESL and Math courses in middle and high school. Miguel also has been an ESL Adult Education instructor for several years.
Miguel has developed a strong sense of service to the Hispanic community in the city of Kenner. He has been a volunteer soccer coach, Hispanic Youth and Hispanic Ministry Coordinator at St. Jerome & Divine Mercy parishes. Miguel’s experience as a second language student and ESL educator have given him an unique perspective in the area of teaching ESL and supporting/training teachers of English Learners.
